This was the first of Chadwick's books that I picked up and it started a love affair with early medieval history. It's a long book, but I devoured it in less than four days, staying up late and waking up early, reading on the bus and the train and even as I walked.
It's a complex story that starts at the beginning, there is no introduction to the story needed. Chadwick gets straight in there and starts dropping hints towards the rest of the story.
Love, betrayal, hate, loss... Everything is in this book, and I'll never get bored of reading it.
